HD Radio Receivers

First, Polk Audio has begun shipping its iSonic Entertainment System. This tabletop-sized radio packs a lot of features into its small size as it includes not just and HD Radio receiver, but an XM Satellite receiver and a single-disk CD player.

However, you pay for all these features as th iSonic has an announced price of $599 – too steep to be a true consumer product.

It’s sad but true that stations are converting to HD Radio a lot faster than manufacturers. Isonic is only the second tabletop HD Radio introduced this year, the first being the HD Recepter Radio from Boston Acoustics.

Radiosophy says it will begin shipping its MultiStream tabletop unit in time for the holidays, But other than these three manufacturers, I have been unable to find anyone else committed to the tabletop market.

Things are a bit brighter in car audio systems. Kenwood offers two HD Radio tuners that are compatible with a number of its in-car units. Alpine, Panasonic and Sanyo sell in-dash automotive head units that can handle HD Radio and Eclipse has a black box unit that can be used with Eclipse automotive receivers to give their in-dash units HD Radio sound.

On the high end, there is Audio Design Associates (ADA) with five units that are multicast HD2 channel ready.

HD Radio Stations

There are now more than 960 radio stations broadcasting HD Radio. This is up about 300 from April.

Ibiquity, the creator of advocate for HD Radio says, "Thousands of radio stations are upgrading to digital HD Radio technology. Approximately one new HD Radio broadcaster goes on the air each day, reaching every major U.S. city and 60% of all listeners. By 2008, more than 90% of the U.S. population will be reached by HD Radio broadcasters."

So, if there is no HD Radio in your area, be patient. It should be there soon.

HD2 Channels

There are also now stations in 68 markets broadcasting HD2 channels. These are "subchannels" made possible by the fact that HD Radio is digital radio. Broadcasters could, theoretically, add up to five of these subchannels but so far, most seem to be sticking to a single HD2 channel. If you have an HD Radio, you will see these HD2 channels as something like 99.4 HD2 or 99.4 HD3. In other words, they are subchannels of the primary frequency, in this case 99.4

Most of the stations broadcasting HD2 channels are using the channels to either complement their existing programming or are offering something completely different. For example, one of our local station’s primary format is Hot AC , with Jammin’ Oldies on its HD2 channel.

HD Radio enables AM and FM radio stations to broadcast their programs digitally. These digital broadcasts provide listeners with radically improved audio quality, more radio channels through multicasting, and new data services. XM and Sirius, the two American providers of satellite radio, share the market for satellite radio service. XM had a year’s head start, but Sirius still managed to get half of the audience. Both types of satellite services offer similar programs. So what’s the best one to choose?

XM offers 136 streams while Sirius only offers 119. Another benefit that XM has over Sirius is that it offers 2 premium channels, Playboy and High Voltage. Sirius does not offer premium channels. Two of the categories that these satellite providers are battling over are music and news. Let’s compare what each has to offer.

Music Streams

Both of these satellite services pretty much offer the same amount of music steams. Sirius offers 65 and XM offers 68. There is a variety of types of music to choose from on both stations so you will not get bored.

Music Decade Choices

XM has the advantage over Sirius on this one, because it offers music from the 40’s. On the same token, Sirius offers music from the 90’s, as well as current hits. Plus, both stations offer music from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s.

Country Music

Both satellite services offer country music. You can listen to country hits, classic country, alternative country and country mixes. XM wins this category, since it offers 5 streams over Sirius’ 4. If variety in country music is important to you then XM is the best choice in this category.

Rock Music

Sirius has a slight edge in this category, by offering 15 streams. XM offers 14. Still, both offer subgenres and remain very competitive in this area. Because both Sirius and XM radio offer several rock music options you will always be able to find a station to fit your mood, no matter which satellite service you are using.

Dance and Latin Music

Both XM and Sirius offer Dance and Latin categories of music. The Latin subgenres include Mexicana and tropical music. Sirius offers 6 streams in this category. XM offers 4. Either way, both stations get you up and dancing.

Other Genres

Both stations offer hours of different types of music. From Classical to Jazz, there’s something for everyone. Sirius also offers Urban music. The great quality of music that they both offer is why many are turning to satellite radio.

News Comparisons

Sirius wins for the number of news streams. Sirius offers 13 of these streams while XM offers 11. Both offer many news stations, such as FOX, CNBC, Bloomberg, CNN and MSNBC. They also offer news stations presented in different languages.

Final Analysis

With both offering so many music and news programs, as well as talk shows and other forms of entertainment, it’s difficult to decide which one is the better choice. One thing is certain. With almost endless entertainment being offered by both services, it’s definitely worth it to subscribe to either one of them.

Satellite radio is the latest trend in the world of radio entertainment. It is also known as subscription radio and pay radio. This is due to the fact that a paid subscription is required in order to access it. The reason for the paid subscription is because it has programs that are not offered by traditional AM and FM stations.

How Does Satellite Radio Work?

As the name implies, satellite radio uses satellites to send the programs to listeners. The radio signal goes from the earth-based stations to the space satellites, then back down to the radio receivers. The signals reach a much larger area than regular radio antennas. Satellite radio is now available to most of the world.

What is Needed to Listen to Satellite Radio?

To begin enjoying this service, you will need the actual satellite radio. This is also known as a receiver or tuner. An antenna is also required. You will need a subscription to one of the providers in order to get the programming on your receiver. Three such providers are:

WorldSpace-available in Europe, Asia and Africa.
XM Radio-available in North America.
Sirius-also available in North America.

Because the providers have exclusive rights to the individual radio signals that they send out, each has different hardware that pick up these individual signals. Each receiver has a Radio ID, or serial number. Once you have a subscription, you will get an activation code that will allow you to begin receiving the radio signals.

What Types of Satellite Radios are there?

There are three types of satellite radios to choose from. They are:

Dedicated car or home radio. As the names imply, the signal is picked up by your car or home stereo systems.

Plug and Play Radio. With this system you can listen to the radio in either your home or your car, with just one subscription.

Portable radio. This radio features a rechargeable battery. The antenna is built in and you can listen to it with headphones. You can take this type of radio wherever you go.

What are the Benefits of Satellite Radio?

The benefits of satellite radio are many. These include:

Clear, static free reception.

It’s almost totally commercial free.

More than 100 programs that span different types of music.

Exclusive talk shows, news, sports, cultural and educational programs. From Howard Stern to Martha Stewart, there’s something for everyone. The data transmitted includes the name and artist of songs and programs, as well as the channel. With this feature you can easily choose what you want to listen to.

Although some may question why they should pay for radio when they can listen to free FM and AM stations, more and more people are choosing satellite radio subscriptions. With so many choices of music and programs to listen to and the virtual commercial free environment, they consider it well worth the price.

What is satellite radio?

This is the most basic question of course. Satellite radio is a subscription based service where users can receive music and talk programming on their radios broadcast from a satellite.

No, you can only get local stations with an FM receiver.

Can I use my satellite radio in my home?

I have Sirius and want to switch to XM. Can I use the same radio? No, the two major providers (Sirius and XM) do not use compatible equipment. If you want to switch providers you will have to buy all new equipment.

Coast-to-Coast a.m. with George Nori and Art Bell used to have a special collection of guests on the air each night. They had people who talked about extreme weather, alien beings, UFOs, military technologies, secret government projects, alternative energy, space missions, natural phenomena, ghosts and all sorts of bizarre and interesting things. In fact they would talk all through the night and even allow people to call in and ask questions of the guests.

Unfortunately coast-to-coast a.m. with George Nori and Art Bell has turned into a Liberal sounding board and reminds me much of NPR or other liberal talk shows. In fact these days there are 9/11 conspiracy theorists and many people who simply hate the Bush Administration. This is why I will no longer listen to the coast-to-coast a.m. radio show.

I am not sure why they turned to such a Liberal hodgepodge of BS in citing further mass media hysteria. Perhaps the radio show has been ax to grind, although for the life of me I can’t figure out what it would possibly be, as the radio station used to be quite successful.

Perhaps it’s because they are now radio broadcasting from Los Angeles during some shows and they have a Liberal skewed view of life on Earth. But what do people from Los Angeles know, after all there are 16.5 million people in Southern California living on 460 square miles of concrete and of course they haven’t a clue as to what the rest of the world is about. Please consider this opinion in 2006.

Sound like music to your ears? You’re not alone. In fact, recent RadioShack survey found that nearly 60 percent of young adults said they want their wireless phones to have the ability to play music. Try these tips for getting music on your cell phone from the wireless experts at RadioShack.

The Satellite Radio Connection

The latest multimedia wireless phones from Sprint let you listen to SIRIUS satellite radio from your handset. Tuning In

iTunes users can check out the Motorola ROKR from Cingular Wireless. The phone lets you listen to your favorite songs while text messaging, taking pictures or checking e-mail. If an incoming call comes while the music’s on, you can just hit "pause" and talk away. Here’s how to use the phone:

The two things people love the most about satellite radio are: quality and content. These two things are also the very things that encourage people to go out and buy a satellite radio. So what if it costs $300 for a satellite radio receiver, and another $13 per month for subscriptions. The benefits of satellite radio far out weigh the price!

High Audio Quality

Satellite radio quality is more than just the overall value of the product. It is also how clear, uninterrupted, and flawless the satellite signal is. Satellite radio provides all the radio you could possibly desire without messy static, and having to change the channel during a commute. The high analog-to-digital conversion means that you can listen to the radio without all that creepy hissing, dead air, and other frustrating audio interference.

The digital quality of satellite radio, in technical terms, is 128kb/s 44.1 kHz. For you technologically impaired and non-number minded folks, that means that when you listen to satellite radio it’s like listening to a CD, only you don’t have to mess with unwrapping it.

Almost Limitless Content

When digital television hit the market, people were scrambling over each other trying to get their hands on it. More of the same for satellite radio, but unlike its visual counterpart, satellite radio is commercial free. That means exactly what it sounds like; no one interrupts your listening pleasure to try and sell you acne cream or hypnosis.

Satellite radio content is more than just local radio stations pawning off what other people think is good music on you. With satellite radio you can listen to what makes you happy, what puts you in a good mood, what suits you as a person. You don’t have to listen to Hip Hop, Country, or R&B if all you want to hear is Sinatra and the Rat Pack. Content is also where the two satellite radio companies are fighting for your favor. XM may offer more of what you want to hear than Sirius, and/or vice versa. Before subscribing you should take the time to find out which one would give you more content for your buck.

Satellite radio is playing dirty. Each company is fighting for the exclusive rights to broadcast certain programs and transmissions on their radio systems. Not only are they fighting for programs, but also people!

Satellite radio is making great strides for its customers. The companies know that if you are willing to pay the money for a receiver, and then pay a month subscription fee, they should be willing to give you the absolute best programming they can offer. So why tie yourself down to earthbound radio stations when you can reach for the stars with satellite radio?
